Organizational Context
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the largest humanitarian agency of the United Nations (UN) in the world, saving and changing lives. We provide life-saving aid in emergencies and use food assistance to build a path to peace, stability, and prosperity for populations recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change. The development programs that WFP implements in Guatemala are a turning point that changes lives in the most vulnerable communities of this Central American country. Guatemala faces serious challenges in achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 2) Zero Hunger, which includes eliminating all malnutrition by 2030.
Guatemala, a multiethnic country with a rich cultural heritage, is a country where poverty affects people in different spheres of life, including food insecurity, nutrition, health, and education. Almost half of the population cannot afford the cost of the basic food basket. As a result, the prevalence of stunting (developmental impairment due to malnutrition) in children under 5 years of age is one of the highest in the world and the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean.
